I feel sorry for those kids that lost their friends and teachers in Broward County. That is a tragedy no one, regardless of age should have to go through. It has to be extremely difficult to go through something like that as a teenager, and I really do empathize with them.
But rather than try to heal from the tragedy, several of the students have allowed the leftists in this country, who absolutely detest the Second Amendment, to try and use them as pawns to achieve their goal of ridding the Second Amendment from the Constitution. It didn’t work, much to the angst of the students, who really don’t know any better.
The students, in just a week mind you, hired busses, packed lunches, got their fellow students organized, and went to Tallahassee, Florida’s state capital, to persuade legislators there to consider outlawing AR-15’s and other automatic weapons. They pleaded their case. They said either “you are with the children or you are with the blood-sucking NRA”. The last I knew, the NRA didn’t suck blood (and no…I’m not a member of the NRA, and no…I don’t own a gun).
It didn’t work.
Regardless the tactic the students took, and the fact that they had a couple of the Democrats in the legislature on their side, in the end the measure to consider moving the request out of committee and directly to the floor for a vote (which requires 2/3 majority in Florida), fell short with 36 voting for the measure and 73 voting against it. The students were outraged!
They couldn’t believe that the legislature would put the Constitution of our country above their needs! It’s unconscionable. But it happened.
And it is happening all over the country and school students protest the school shootings. Hey…I’m all for stopping the school shootings! I say that if you have a way to do it that absolutely everyone will abide by, and not just law-abiding citizens, I’m all for it. The problem is, this kid that did the shooting in Florida…in fact every person that has gone into a school and shot and killed people broke the law. What is to say that is going to change if you pass another law? The answer? It won’t change a thing. 98% of these mass murders have taking place in “gun-free” zones. I’m not saying arming everybody there would help. I doubt it would have helped in Las Vegas. But it certainly improves the odds.
That’s something that these students don’t understand. Unless you work on the mental health angle, and admittedly, that’s the toughest angle to work in this case, you aren’t going to be able to get anything accomplished. That’s what Donald Trump is aiming at in his proposal. And that has to be the first thing done. Sane people do not go into a building or plan a mass shooting. If you accept that argument, you have a great starting point, and you can work at the problem from that angle. Taking away guns from law-abiding citizens won’t work, because criminals won’t abide by laws. If you think that making a law outlawing guns (or any type of guns) will stop the problem, think about how well taking away alcohol worked during prohibition! Major fail!
Carry on world…you’re dismissed!
