You think YOUR life is being impacted by the spread of the Coronavirus? You just wait! Actually, we ALL are being impacted by it…some obviously more than others. Here in the desert, to be honest, I have been given a couple weeks off of some volunteering duties that I have done for the past five years. But while that may mean that boredom is setting in a little bit for the ol’ Lone Cactus, it’s absolutely nothing compared to what’s happening to most of America.
And for folks that are in this country illegally? It could be the death blow.
Forget about a new Dreamer’s act. Forget about a path to citizenship. Forget it if you are in Mexico, or Central America and you want to join some caravan to the southern border. You are going to be turned away, even if you are seeking asylum. At least in the short term.
That’s the latest from Homeland Security. And it follows other countries. Canada has closed it’s borders to all who aren’t Canadian. The European Union is blocking all immigrants from entering their countries. And those seeking a better way of life elsewhere in the world, are just plain out of luck. At least for now.
And there is a move afoot by some in power to actually start deporting ALL illegal aliens now to help stem the tide of COVID-19. It’s being considered, though probably will face some court challenges. Of course, the mere fact that the people are here illegally should tell you that the courts, who are supposed to uphold the law, would almost certainly…if they were doing their jobs…have to uphold the deportations.
So, the question one must pose at this point is, “Is this the end of illegal immigration in this country?” Are we as Americans going to protect ourselves and our families by not allowing immigration, especially illegal immigration from occurring? And if so, what does Mexico do with the thousands of people that amass at it’s northern border every year, hoping that they can somehow wiggle their way into the United States and live “the good life”?
These are all legitimate questions. And while the left in this country would love to see the illegals be made citizens so they could get more votes (which is their main motivation for the belief), in truth, would we as Americans be better shutting our borders to everyone that isn’t a citizen? I mean, if Canada can do it…if the EU can do it…why couldn’t we do it? And if you’re in the country illegally, as some eleven or twelve million people are, do you really have a right to stay and drain the system of reserves of medicines and hospital beds that could be going to legal citizens? I think the overall question here is, do we plant the flag on this one and make it the case to get rid of all folks here illegally? Or, as Obama would have liked, do we decide to keep those that have been here for a decade or more, and have somewhat melded into our society?
I’m not answering the question…I’m asking it. It’s time we decide once and for all what our immigration policy is going to be, and Congress is the body that needs to take the lead on it. If they can’t get it done, then shut down ALL immigration until they can get it done. It’s that simple.
Carry on world…you’re dismissed!
