2020: A New Media Would LOVE To Forget

I’ve always felt that having spent my adult life in media, the one true way you could judge the media isn’t ratings, because quite frankly, those are easily manipulated (and yes…I’ve done so). But it’s looking at what they’ve reported, claimed was fact, and found out later to be false, or made up. The phrase “Fake News” entered our lexicon in the last four or five years, and the media did nothing to stop it’s expansion this year. Here are some stories (God knows, not all!) that the media would rather forget covering in 2020:

Media Celebrates Impeachment: When the House of Representatives voted to impeach Donald Trump, even though everyone in the country knew there was nothing to it, the left-wing MSM celebrated the fact and covered it wall to wall. As we found out later, when the actual transcripts were released that Adam Schiff didn’t have proof of any “high crime or misdemeanor”. He had no proof at all. In fact, the entire impeachment was a sham. Yet, the media covered it like it was history.

Brian Williams’ Fake Math: Think back to the primaries in March. During Super Tuesday, Michael Bloomberg decided he was going to buy the nomination and for Super Tuesday, he spent $570 million to receive all of 31 delegates! Williams discussed this fact on MSNBC with Mara Gay and said that money could have been better spent giving “each American $1 million!” Well, almost. The pair chuckled as they thought of the incredible waste of money the former New York City Mayor had spent. Had they only realized that every American would only be getting a little more than $1, not $1 million, maybe they would have taken a calculator with them onto the set!

Downplaying COVID/Over-hyping COVID: I’m still amazed at this one. Back in January of this year, the media couldn’t rush to call Donald Trump a “racist” and “Xenophobe” fast enough after he suspended flights from China after the whole COVID thing erupted. Even Joe Biden joined in the choir. Nancy Pelosi had a solo, as she went to Chinatown in San Francisco and invited everyone to come to Chinatown and party! Alas, it was only a couple of months later their tune (or the talking points) changed. All of a sudden, it was more over-hyping the COVID story rather than under-hyping it. Then Donald Trump couldn’t shut down the country fast enough. He needed to lock us all in basements as quickly as possible, an angle to the story that is true to this day. In reality, MOST of America that catches this is fine in about a week…it’s no worse to MOST (certainly not all) Americans than the flu. Of course, if you’re elderly, or have one of the several pre-conditions, you need to avoid this at all costs. But thanks to the media for getting this one wrong not once, but twice!

Protests vs. Riots: As the whole COVID thing swirled around us in the spring, there was this huge disconnect as to what was a protest, and what was a riot. After all, George Floyd’s death demanded protests, which is covered under the First Amendment (well, peaceable assembly is), and yet, we watched the media cover the “riots” portion of the protests as peaceful, standing in front of burning buildings and with b-roll of looters taking TV sets out of local businesses. Then it became not a good thing to go to political rallies because you couldn’t social distance. But it was ok to riot and protest and not social distance. Huh?

Hunter Biden: You had to know this one would make the list, right? Here’s a guy that epitomizes making money off of daddy’s job, and he raked in millions by sitting on the Board of Directors of an energy company called Barisma in Ukraine, with absolutely no knowledge or experience of the energy industry. Then, he made millions by getting Chinese money (backed by the Chinese government in at least one case) to invest in a company that he and allegedly his father were a part of. The media hasn’t covered this story at all, at least until it was revealed that the FBI had Hunter under investigation for tax fraud for the past two years. Joe Biden still hasn’t come clean, just saying that “he’s proud of his son”. More to come…maybe. We’ll have to see how the media actually covers or doesn’t cover this one.

Calling Soldiers Losers and Suckers: I included this one because I have a lot of respect for those that have served our country. They are all winners and heroes. And yet, liberal magazine The Atlantic said that Donald Trump in 2018 while visiting a European gravesite of American soldiers killed during World War II called them “losers and suckers”. Not even Trump antagonist, John Bolton could stand up for that one, as Bolton said he was actually there and said Trump never said it. It turns out The Atlantic was totally wrong on this one. Again, an instance of an anti-Trump media gone off the rails and losing credibility.

There were so many more instances that went on this year, I could keep writing until mid-January and still not cover enough. It IS enough to make me wonder whether the group the Founding Fathers chose to “shine the beacon of truth” on government is actually capable of telling the truth at all. Certainly one would need to wonder whether they deserve that mantle or should have it taken away from them entirely. But that, as they say, is the topic of discussion for another day!

Carry on world…you’re dismissed!

  1. In an interview by the online National Observer with renowned American author and linguistic/cognitive scientist Noam Chomsky, in which he noted worrisome inconsistencies by what are often perceived as “the liberal media”.

Although there are stories published about manmade global warming, “it’s as if … there’s a kind of a tunnel vision — the science reporters are occasionally saying ‘look, this is a catastrophe,’ but then the regular [non-environmental pro-fossil fuel] coverage simply disregards it.”

Then there was the unsigned editorial that a local community newspaper, The Surrey Now-Leader, printed just before Earth Day 2017, titled “Earth Day in need of a facelift”.
Varied lengths of the same editorial were also printed in sister-papers The Langley Times, Chilliwack Progress and Peace Arch News, though it was also run by other B.C. community newspapers, all of which are owned by news-media-mogul (and aspiring oil-refiner) David Black.

It opined that “some people would argue that [the day of environmental action] … is an anachronism”, that it should instead be a day of recognizing what we’ve societally accomplished. “And while it [has] served us well, in 2017, do we really need Earth Day anymore?”

Although in my lifetime I’ve never heard anyone suggest we’re doing so well as to render Earth Day an unneeded “anachronism”, considering the sorry state of the planet’s natural environment, it was the most irresponsible form of editorial journalism I’ve yet seen in my 32 years of newspaper consumption.

For, while some readers may dismiss it as just another opinion, there are many readers (as I once was) who may take such unsigned editorials, especially from their local press, as a seriously considered and balanced argument.

    1. Thanks for the comments. Rather than take unsigned editorials at face value, I prefer to follow those that are the actual opinion leaders. One such interesting person is Michael Shellenberger. If you follow eco-news at all, I’m sure you’ve heard of him. He was a leading environmentalist and global warming advocate for 30 years. He’s published several books and been hailed as an expert on the subject. He has come out and apologized for his stance on global warming/climate change saying that he was wrong and recanted all of his earlier statements. And he did so in an environmental publication, and in his book “Apocalypse Never”. Give it a read.
