Warnock’s Easter Message

I usually don’t comment too much on religion for a very simple reason. Most of us believe in God. Your version may be quite different from mine. Most of us believe that there is life after we are done here on earth. And there are incredibly varying views as to what is require to get you to the next life. I don’t intend to squash anybody’s belief in that regard. Your religion is your religion. Yet, I can’t let this one go by totally unnoticed.

Senator Raphael Warnock (D-Ga) is an ordained minister. And it’s really not some off-shoot, never-heard of religion. This is pretty mainstream stuff. Warnock is a Baptist minister that prior to being elected to the Senate, was the Senior Pastor at the Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta. Now, if that church sounds familiar to you, it should. That’s the church where the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was Senior Pastor. It’s steeped in Christian tradition in this country. To be named the Senior Pastor at that church is the pinnacle for any black Baptist minister.

So you will forgive me if I have to put my head in a sack to keep from hyperventilating when I read Warnock’s Easter Message to his flock in Georgia. He did it on Twitter, and here’s what it looked like:

First and foremost, it reminds me of my favorite Bible passage…Romans 10:9. “If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,… and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.”

That tells me that there are two things that “transcendent” in my religion. The first is that “Jesus is Lord”, and the second is that God raised him from the dead. That is the only reason we actually celebrate Easter. There can be nothing more “transcendent” than the resurrection of Jesus Christ. It is one of the founding principles of Christianity. For Warnock, a supposed man of the cloth and a Baptist man of the cloth at that, to say that the “meaning” of Easter is more transcendent than the resurrection of Christ is a total oxymoron. It IS the meaning of Easter, just as Christ’s birth IS the meaning of Christmas.

Again, I reiterate that I’m not here to tread on anybody’s religious beliefs. But if you’re going to have the word “Reverend” in front of your name, you better understand Christian values and mores. If you’re not going to do that, you may as well believe that Heaven is located in a garage in Buffalo, New York someplace. Your thoughts are so far out of mainstream Christianity that you could never fully believe in the tenets of any mainstream Christian church.

What should be especially galling to the black masses in Georgia, and the entire congregation of Ebenezer Baptist Church is that the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. would be turning over in his grave right now at the reading of that tweet. And that’s just the first part.

Again, if you reread Romans 10:9, you learn that Paul says there are two requirements to get into Heaven. First is that you profess Jesus as Lord. The second is that you believe in your hear that God raised him from the dead. So, the line, “Whether you are Christian or not, through a commitment to helping others we are able to save ourselves is totally wrong. The ONLY way you can be saved is by the two requirements listed above. How in the world do you save yourself? I’m really surprised that Baptists anywhere would go along with that, yet it had over 11,800 likes and was retweeted over 1,700 times! Is it sheer ignorance of the masses or did I miss something?

  1. Not surprising words coming from a Democrat! Perhaps what he really means is it’s with your willingness to pay high taxes to support the governments never ending entitlement programs? Sorta like pre-paying for your ticket to Heaven!

  3. That we can save ourselves contradicts every mainstream religion’s position on good works as a path to salvation. Jesus is the only path and we are saved by grace alone. When we do help others that certainly testifies to our commitment to the Lord’s directives but the doctrine of good works is not accepted by triune Protestant or Catholic doctrine.

      1. BA religious studies, Florida Southern College, 1971 (Lakeland Florida). MA religious studies, Barry College, 1980 (Miami Shores, Florida). Did my paper on the Massachusetts Bay colony Puritans 1620 – 1640 on the doctrinal differences that divided them (most amicably) as Congregationalists or Presbyterians. Took me 10 months but in 2016 I hand wrote the entire New Testament so I kinda know a bit about the topic. Warnock’s message is so heretical I am amazed that his denominational heirarchy even allows him to maintain his office of ordination. If you’ve studied Calvin and Luther and Catholic doctrine – no way his ideas are acceptable. There has been for some time and even from early times a doctrine that we can be participants in directing and securing our own salvation and not while evil or anything it is certainly heretical. It contradicts the “soveriengty of God” and “salvation by grace alone” principles. The old Puritans did fudge a tiny bit in accepting that a man living a Godly, upright and charitable life and had prosperity in vocation , it might be a sign of being in God’s favor but there was no assurance at all.
