Was Stone’s Commuted Sentence Right?

Roger Stone, the longtime Republican operative, and yes, somewhat of a scumbag and sleaze was given a commuted sentenced by the President earlier this past weekend. It brought all sorts of howls from Democrats who felt that Stone should have been locked away for the rest of his life. After all, he was found guilty on charges ranging from witness tampering to obstruction of justice, to lying under oath. All of the charges came as a result of the Mueller Report.

But Stone long maintained, and it turned out was true that his judge was biased against him in his trial; the jury forewoman was a Democrat who had a history of anti-Trump social media posts. And while most Republicans that know him think he’s someone you’d better off NOT knowing, they did say that he was railroaded.

Now comes the questions…did Trump do the right thing in commuting his sentence?

The facts say that first of all, Stone will always be a convicted felon. Trump’s actions don’t remove the findings of the court case, regardless of how biased they were. What they removed was the sentence. Stone was supposed to start serving a 40-month sentence in jail yesterday. He doesn’t have to do that. He was supposed to have probation when he got out. He doesn’t have to go through that. He was supposed to be wearing an ankle bracelet when he got out as well. That’s gone.

So, we still have the question, is it right to commute a sentence of someone like this? Well, let’s look at the past.

Bobo Obama commuted the sentences of 1,715 people during his eight years in office. 504 of those folks were serving life sentences. Obama said he did it because the justice system was biased against blacks.

George W. Bush commuted, pardoned, or rescinded the sentences of some 200 people during his eight years in office. Bill Clinton’s tally ran to 450, and included Marc Rich, the Glencore chief who was charged with tax evasion and making deals with Iran during the hostage crisis.

Jimmy Carter’s number was up around 350. Ronald Reagan’s was 395.

Donald Trump has pardoned, commuted, or suspended the sentences of 11 people. Yes…just 11 people, including Roger Stone.

So, Democrats, you can forget about making a big deal about this. If it was done for political purposes, you can say the same thing about Bobo Obama’s 1,715 prisoners he released. Every president does it, and if you don’t like it, run for president yourself. Then we can scream at you when you do it…because everyone does!
